Recognize what is changing

The label matters less than the pattern.

Substance use deserves attention when control is slipping, consequences are growing, or stopping creates physical or emotional risk. An assessment can clarify what level of help is appropriate.

Control

You use more than intended, cannot reliably cut back, or spend increasing time getting, using, or recovering.

Consequences

Use is affecting health, sleep, work, finances, relationships, readiness, or legal responsibilities.

Risk

Blackouts, overdose, dangerous combinations, impaired driving, or severe withdrawal symptoms raise the urgency.

Function

Alcohol or drugs have become the main way to manage pain, trauma, mood, isolation, or the transition out of service.

Look at the whole picture

Substance use may be only one part of what needs care.

Trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, pain, sleep disruption, gambling, relationship stress, and suicide risk can overlap with substance use. That does not establish a diagnosis. It does mean a complete assessment should ask about more than the substance alone.

When choosing care, ask whether the provider can assess co-occurring concerns, coordinate with medical care, and explain what level of treatment they recommend and why.
